For individuals in recovery, the holidays could be a time of pleasure and celebration, but they can also be a period of fear, worry, and even relapse. Your loved one’s recovery and your enjoyment of the holidays are intertwined, and you must find the perfect balance.  Some ways you can help recovering loved ones include:

Inquire about their recovery status before offering them alcohol

If you plan to go drinking with the person, inquire about their recovery status first. Let your loved ones know that you care for their happiness and want them to have an excellent time at your event by expressing your concern for their well-being. As one method of doing this, suggest that they bring a fellow recovering addict or alcoholic to the party. Giving a friend or family member a confidante who understands their struggles is the best method to assist them in coping with difficult times. No matter who is present, don’t give them booze if they’re not ready for it. While some individuals may miss their bottle or couple of glasses of wine, the festivities are about spending quality moments with friends and family

Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself is just as important as making your loved one’s holiday more joyful. Don’t fear to seek help from others at this time. Attend Support Group meetings to connect with people who understand. These people may offer non-alcohol activities and advice on how to deal with difficult situations. Remind yourself that you must also look after your well-being.

Encourage them to cheer each other up

Those recovering should be encouraged to cheer each other up by talking about their good deeds. Anyone attending should bring a family member or close friend who is familiar with recovery struggles. Your loved one will deal with difficult situations better if they have a supportive companion at their side.

In the event of an overwhelming situation:

  1. Let your loved ones understand that it’s acceptable to refuse an invitation, miss an activity, or exit a party early.
  2. Make sure that you have a backup strategy in place if they agree to participate in the celebrations.
  3. Prepare their thoughts to deal with a circumstance when their safety or well-being might be threatened. If you can tell them that you will always be there to help them out of challenging or upsetting events, they may feel less anxious.

Encourage them to practise healthy routines

Teach yourself how to support your loved one’s rehabilitation. Urge them to eat healthy food, exercise, and engage in other healthy activities on a regular basis. Offer to accompany them to a recovery support program. As the winter and holiday seasons approach, be sure to remind them how easily they may be thrown into a state of worry, tension, and depression. It’s essential to spend time with loved ones during the holidays, so let them know you’re available to help. A family member or friend battling an illness should know that you are there for them and will do all in your power to help them get back on their feet.
